From my own observation I'd say 1977 is where they really started to vary the tempo of Eyes. For instance compare
this version from 77-10-29
http://archive.org/details/gd1977-10-29.sbd.miller.92085.sbeok.flac16

to the next time they played Eyes on 11-04
http://archive.org/details/gd1977-11-04.mtx.chappell.SB5.29091.flac16

Two all time great versions certainly but the first comes in at about 96 bpm where as the second is cranked all the way up to 128!
In general, I can't think of many other songs that varied that much from night to night.

I believe Eyes started to speed up in '76 actually. And then they decided to sometimes make it even faster. Some early '80s versions are ridiculously fast, like this one:

I enjoy those versions, but none of them can hold a candle to the ones from '73-'74.

And let's not forget that everything changed again during the Spring 1990 tour. The Eyes from Oakland Coliseum in February is still pretty fast, but the next one, on 3/25 at The Knick is much more of that relaxed island groove thing that they stuck with for the next five years, and notably in the next show on 3/29 with Branford Marsalis. I think there were a couple more fast ones in the summer, perhaps, but they were slower paced after that.

Cant stand those fast Eyes. We have been over this before.
Ridiculous indeed. I dont like cocaine, but I do enjoy the
smell of it. Holy poop Batman.
"How bout we do an 4 minute and 57 second Eyes tonight?
I just got some blow off Healy"

Wake up to find out that you are disguised as Peruvian
hairless squirell.
I think I will head back to 1974 for my Eyes...Phil barely
has time to drop the proper bombs at that 1982 speed is the problem.

Thanks though LobSTAR :) Jerry had a date with a big fat
line Im sure. Some of the fast Eyes are OK, but most dont
sound good to my ears (imo).
So much Dead, so little time... Gotta cram it in.

That is why this is by far my favorite 80's Eyes. 20 minutes of meandering, noodling Jerry in no hurry to go anywhere. Never ending Eyes. It was like a wish come true at the show...especially with the Close Encounters cloud show going on...

Oh, we All know how magical the 13th, 14th, and 15th at
the Greek was in the 'anniversary' of 83. That version is
stupendous. And just an increadible run. Im glad you caught it, and thanks for the reminder. I wish they were all never-ending Eyes.

nice eyes. Word has it jerry broke a string that's why it's so long. Eyes of the decade is tough to call but Charlotte 3/91 is tough to beat. At least some effort here. estimated is clunky and the wheel is kind of a mess. Not horrible by any means. good to see Midnight hour again. Can anyone hear Dylan? Is it me?

That lobster has been around for a long time.
Since the Cretaceous period. At least.

All of the '76 renditions of Eyes are awesome actually (only 11 of 'em though), despite the faster tempo. Here's the first time they played it that year, and also probably the best post-hiatus version I've ever heard:
http://archive.org/details/gd1976-06-09.sbd.miller.95399.sbeok.flac16

They also sped up Let it Grow after the hiatus, and of course did away with the beautiful WRS intro, yet they slowed down TLEO :-(
